Programming the Atmel EEPROM with an XS40 Board V1.0

Q:

I want to make sure that the XS40 Board Ver. 1.0 will be able to program the Atmel eeprom. An entry in the FAQ's led me to believe that only Ver. 1.1 and later could program the eeprom.

A:

In order to program the serial eeprom on a V1.0 XS40 Board, you need to have an XC4005E FPGA in the socket so the board can be run in the 5V mode. The AT17C256 Atmel serial EEPROM is large enough to store an XC4005E bitstream, so you will need to place one of those in the socket. And you will have to solder a jumper wire from pin 6 of the serial eeprom socket to ground. Then you can program the eeprom.
