How do I disable the 8031 microcontroller on the XS Boards?

Q:

If someone really doesn't want to use the 8031 on the XS40 or XS95 board, can't they just pull it our of the socket and use the FPGA or CPLD and/or RAM only?

Also, in designs that don't use the 8031, I assume that it is alway necessary to design a VCC Logic 1 to RST, pin 36. Is this true for all designs? You can see how both questions are related.

A:

Yes, you can remove the 8031 microcontroller and/or RAM and still use the XS Board. The 8031 RST pin is pulled up with a resistor on the XS95 Board, so all you have to do is make sure the FPGA pin stays tristated. You should program the RST pin to output a VCC logic 1 for the XS40 Board.
