Which serial EEPROMs are recommended for the XS40 Boards?

Q:

It is my understanding that the Serial EEPROM on the XS40 Board is optional. Is there a particular EEPROM you recommend for this board?

A:

We recommend an Atmel 17C256 with 256 Kbits = 32 Kbytes of storage. It uses 5V flash storage and can be in-system programmed by the XS40 Board. It is large enough to store bitstreams for the XC4005XL FPGA.

Unfortunately, Atmel does not have a larger device that will fit in the 8-pin socket for programming the XC4010 FPGA. You will have to use a Xilinx XC1700 serial PROM for the XS40-010 Board. You will need an external device programmer to program the XC1700.
