Getting more than 5 bits from the XS Board back to the PC

Q:

I have a question regarding getting external data inputs into the xs40 board to be used on the FPGA. I tried getting 8 inputs into the board but to no avail. I also tried to get 8 outputs to the parallel port but I am having a lot of trouble since there are only 5 available. Could you please give me some input as to how it might be done? Thanks.

A:

Getting eight outputs back to the PC through the parallel port can be done by shifting them out of the XS Board and into the PC. You will need to build a shift register in the XS Board, load your data into it, and then have a program in the PC shift the bits out of the register and grabs them off one of the five status lines of the parallel port.
